ARH Announces the Addition of New High-Definition Magnetic Resonance System

June 23, 2008, Low Moor, VA – Alleghany Regional Hospital has incorporated one the most advanced diagnostic tools for helping physicians reach confident diagnoses to provide the best patient care. The new Signa HDx 1.5T MR system from GE Healthcare delivers highly detailed images of the human body with increased speed, better resolution and unique applications. According to Connie Salyards, Radiology Team Leader at ARH, this advanced technology provides shorter exams and greater comfort for patients, while providing higher diagnostic confidence for doctors.

“Some patients can present special challenges when undergoing MR testing,” said Salyards. “Now, even those who are the most difficult to examine with conventional MR approaches can be easily imaged and diagnosed.”

“One feature of the Signa HDx 1.5T MR system is the ability to do dual breast scanning,” added Salyards. “In the time it normally takes to image just one breast, we can now image both breasts simultaneously. The system also tolerates patient motion very well during brain scans, which reduces retakes. And it eliminates the need for very sick or weak cardiac patients to hold their breath during heart scans.”

“The addition of the Signa HDx 1.5T MR system complements and extends the range of quality diagnostic services that ARH offers residents of the Highlands,” Matt Mathias, Associate Administrator says. “It provides us with vastly improved image quality and imaging speed, and enhances the overall diagnostic confidence we have in all of our studies.” The Signa HDx 1.5T MR system is the latest evolution of GE Healthcare’s long line of MR innovations. Originally developed in the late 1970s, from discoveries made in the 1940s, MR scans combine the power of magnetic and radiofrequency fields, allowing physicians to view the tissue structure of internal anatomy without exploratory surgery.

MR exams are used when people are ill or injured, or when a physician suspects a medical problem that is not easily detectable from a conventional physical examination. The GE Signa HDx 1.5T MR system non-invasively assists physicians in the diagnosis of a variety of anatomical areas, such as the head, abdomen and chest, including detailed imaging of the vascular system and major organs.

Alleghany Regional Hospital offers leading-edge technology in diagnostic equipment. Utilizing the latest technology, the ARH Imaging Department offers a full scope of services, including: Diagnostic Radiology with Digital Fluoroscopy; DEXA Bone Density Scans; Diagnostic Ultrasound; Mobile Radiography; CT Scanner (Computerized Axial Tomography); MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging); Mammography/Breast Imaging; Cardiovascular Procedures (Doppler & Echocardiograms); Epidural Steroid Injections for Pain Management; Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsies; Stereotactic Breast Biopsies; Nuclear Medicine; and Interventional Procedures/Angiography. Complementing both the broad-ranging services and leading-technology equipment, Alleghany Regional Hospital uses PACS, short for Picture Archival Communications System. PACS enables our physicians to quickly access and review diagnostic images and reports from virtually anywhere in the hospital, from their offices, and in some instances, even from their homes. These digital images are immediately available for viewing on a computer monitor and can be saved to any number of portable media devices.
